Why This Gathering?

Before we were born, we lived in the womb. This was our first ecology. It is an environment where safety, care, and belonging were first learned.

Long before the emergence of nation-states, territorial borders, capitalist economies, and medicalised birth, the womb functioned as humanity’s first site of safety, belonging, and becoming. In many African cosmologies, the womb is not understood as an isolated biological organ, but as part of a wider ecological continuum which links land, water, ancestors and future generations.

Within this worldview, water and land is not inert matter but a living ancestral force. Rivers, rain, menstrual blood, and amniotic fluid are understood as carriers of memory and lineage. The oceans in a woman’s body mirrors earth’s waters. This situates human gestation within the same cosmological order as soil fertility and seasonal cycles.

From an African cosmological perspective, the violation of the womb cannot be separated from the pollution of water and extraction of land. Re-centering the womb as humanity’s first ecology is therefore a critical act of spiritual resistance. This does not romanticise the past. It insists on remembering and honouring cosmologies that affirm the womb as a site of sacred continuity between body, land, water, and future generations.

About The Course

Womb as the First Ecology: A Living Gathering is a space to sit with this rupture, to experience the trauma of disconnection, and find a way of healing and restoring the feminine planetary principle. This is a relational space for collective listening and healing. Knowledge and wisdom are not delivered; it is held, felt, and re-membered.

The gathering moves from the body to ancestral memory, to land and cosmology, to political and economic realities. Rather than ending in hopelessness, the gatherings turn back again toward future imagining care rooted in collective care rather than domination and extraction.

Drawing from African spirituality, political economy, neuroscience, land justice, and lived experience, the gathering holds the womb as an ancestral archive, a political site, and a living ecological system shaped by history and power.
Restoration is not limited to the physical womb. It includes ancestral, political, ecological, and systemic repair.

Why gather around the womb now?

To restore the womb as ecology is to restore the feminine principle in a world founded on extraction and domination.
This gathering: refuses to pathologise bodies harmed by systemic violence, links personal experience to collective history, situates spirituality inside material and political conditions as well as honour African cosmologies as living knowledge systems

The gatherings recognise that what happens to land happens to bodies, and what happens to wombs impact on the future of life itself.

Who is this for?

This gathering is for people who feel called to sit with the womb as a shared ecological concern, including:
Individuals holding personal, ancestral, or political wounds in the body. This is not limited to people who have physical wombs.

Birth workers, healers, and caregivers witnessing womb trauma in their practice
Scholars, students, and researchers engaging embodiment, coloniality, gender, and power
Environmental and social justice practitioners seeking spiritually grounded, African-centred frameworks of healing and repair

How will we gather?

We will gather every third Thursday of the month starting from August 2026 – March 2027.
Each gathering will include:

  • grounding or ritual opening
  • thematic offering by Dr Mmatshilo Motsei and invited guests/facilitators/teachers
  • collective reflection and dialogue
  • space for questions, grief, integration and healing.
